Have you heard about the new Aussie domain on the block? You can now have a .au domain for your business. So, let’s get down to it and learn what .au means for you and why you may want a .au domain.

What is a .au domain?

It works just like your current .com or .com.au domain. Now you can simply have .au as your website domain. For example, instead of using allcoveredit.com.au, we can now use allcoveredit.au – short and sweet!

How would I benefit from a .au domain?

A .au domain is shorter, simpler, and purely Australian. It aligns us with other countries that have already adopted short domains including New Zealand (.nz), the United States (.us), and the United Kingdom (.uk).

What does the new .au domain mean for me?

The introduction of a new Australian domain gives you more options when choosing a domain, and on the flip side, it gives you more bases to cover to avoid a copycat situation.

Should I get a .au domain?

We recommend obtaining your .au domain, just as we recommend having both the .com and .com.au versions of your domain so you can avoid an imposter using your name with an extremely similar domain. This situation can impact your customer base and business reputation while causing all-around confusion.

We also think .au looks pretty snazzy. Its simplicity makes your website address memorable and clearly says, “I’m an Australian Business” which is a valuable statement.

When is the .au domain available?

The new .au domain is available to purchase now and will come into effect this week on Thursday 24th March. No need to stress about anyone stealing your domain just yet – if you own the .com.au domain, you will be given priority for a limited time to purchase the corresponding .au domain.

How do I get a .au domain?

You have two options to obtain a .au domain for your business. You can either go directly through a domain provider or through your managed IT service provider. All Covered IT can purchase and manage your domains and renewals, plus obtain your security certificates and all the other fun bits that go along with running a website. We do all the work behind the scenes to keep it simple and stress-free for you.
